“What we hunger for perhaps more than anything else is to be known in our full humanness, and yet that is often just what we also fear more than anything else. It is important to tell at least from time to time the secret of who we truly and fully are . . . because otherwise we run the risk of losing track of who we truly and fully are and little by little come to accept instead the highly edited version which we put forth in hope that the world will find it more acceptable than the real thing. It is important to tell our secrets too because it makes it easier . . . for other people to tell us a secret or two of their own . . . ”
― Frederick Buechner, Telling Secrets
I don’t know. I wouldn’t say I want to share all my secrets. I’m not that brave. Or crazy.
But, this is a time to be real. It’s a place to be free and extend the hand of freedom to my family, my friends, my readers. Each time I encounter a person who is willing to be real and reveal themselves to me and the world around them, I feel one more chain break free on my heart. So, I’m ready to break more and help you let go of a few of your own. And I promise, I’m not trying to make you feel uncomfortable (though sometimes that is a necessary part of life work) but trying to get to the truth, get to the living. Paula D’Arcy told us that when it comes to writing, “don’t try to be remarkable.” So, I’ll let that go and just try to be real.
So I look forward to writing freely. I look forward to finding my words with you. I look forward to finding my way.
